The name Calimesa is said to come from "Cali" (which of course refers to California) and "mesa" from the Spanish word meaning "table" or "table-lands." This would make sense considering all of the Spanish influence in the area since the 1700s.

Calimesa remained an unincorporated census up until the end of 1991. Soon after the city of Yucaipa was incorporated, Calimesa followed.
